Top tips for knitting beginners

Whether you are a newbie at the craft or want to sharpen your current skill set, our team has set out some handy tips that can help to make it simpler. When learning something new, it can naturally be frustrating and leave you stuck with a lot of questions. Hopefully these top tips can provide some guidance but if you’re still at a standstill, Stitch Kit is here to help.

Top tips for knitting beginners

Prevent the yarn ball from tangling

When you start a new ball, feel around the inside, and pull out the first clump of yarn you find, you should now have the tail end tucked inside. Use this to start knitting and you won’t have to worry about your ball rolling off or becoming tangled. A simple tip that can save a lot of unnecessary frustration and confusion later down the line.

Choose a plain yarn

When starting out, it is best to go for a simple yarn as it is generally easier to knit with. Plain yarn is usually cheaper too, meaning you can experiment more with it and not feel pressured to make no mistakes. Once you’ve got the hang of things, that’s the best time to go for some fun yarns.

Make a swatch

So, you’re ready to go with the needles and yarn in hand but before you get going, it is best to make a swatch. What is this? A swatch is a small, knitted square to give an insight into how the knitting will turn out. This is super useful for beginners as it can allow you to get to grips with the craft before starting the project. You can learn if your knitting turns out too loose or too tight, rectify this and then start on your crafting.

It is also a good tool for understanding if your yarn and needles work well together, avoiding any frustration later in your project. You can use the swatch to determine your gauge and row-gauge.

Don’t give up

Sometimes we can become overwhelmed with anything that we haven’t done before or something that isn’t going as we would have anticipated. This is a completely natural reaction, and we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t all encounter some mistakes. Plough on and these small mistakes are all part of the learning process and will teach you what not to do again. Don’t give up, every expert was in the position you are now in.
